Christmas Awakening by Ann Voss Peterson
The Butler’s Daughter…
After ten long years, Marie Leonard returns to Jenkins Cove determined to prove her father was murdered. Desperate, she tries to communicate with his spirit, but the only answer she receives is from the deceased mistress of Drake House… the wife of the man who had once been the love of Marie’s life.
The Reclusive Billionaire…
Brandon Drake has made plenty of mistakes over the years, and the one that haunts him most is letting Marie go. He thought he could move on by marrying the beautiful and accomplished Charlotte—and he tried to make their marriage work—but he could never forget Marie. When Charlotte dies in a fiery car crash, Brandon blames himself and withdraws from the world—until Marie shows up on his doorstep, speaking of ghosts and murder, and Brandon knows he must protect her. Because even though she can never be his, he can’t bear to lose her… not again.
Excerpt from Christmas Awakening:
Marie closed her eyes, her lids swollen and hot. Ten years ago, her father had helped her put her life in perspective. He’d hugged away her tears in that stiff-backed way he had. He’d encouraged her to get away from Drake House and make the life she deserved.
Without him, she felt lost.
If only she could talk to him about her stirred-up feelings for Brandon.
Maria knew what her father would say. He would tell her to get away from Drake House. The same thing he’d told her ten years ago.
Too bad she couldn’t follow his advice this time. Not until she found out who killed him. Not until she brought his murderer to justice.
She reached to the top of the desk and snapped on the ancient transistor radio she remembered her father using to listen to his beloved Orioles on summer nights. She turned her attention to the last desk drawer. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” drifted over the airwaves.
Here she was. Home for Christmas. Except the only person she had to come home to was gone. Taken away forever.
She turned the dial. Static took over.
Marie twisted the knob. Now she couldn’t get a signal at all. She rubbed a hand over her eyes. She was too tired for this. Maybe she should get some sleep and finish going through the desk tomorrow. She reached up to switch the radio off. Shadows of a voice rustled among the white noise. “Murder.”
Marie jerked her hand back.
“Murder.” There it was again. A whisper rising from the static... "Marie."
